07/25/2011 - Kamloops Restaurant Spotlight

Have you ever been to Greece? I haven't but I'd love to go!

I can only imagine what it would be like to stroll through the neighborhoods of the gods, savor the cuisine offered in ouzo bars, bistro's, and tavernas, while submerging myself completely in the routine of Grecian life.   Fabulous!!  But I can only imagine.  Until I dined at the Dorian Greek House where I discovered a Mediterranean escape in Kamloops, and the snapshot I had been seeking.

Settling in on the mezzanine, Larry, my server, offered me a glass of Makedonikos, their most popular wine, and I willingly accepted.  Are you kidding? Like I would refuse. I smiled as I took my first sip and mentally toasted a scantily clad Greek god on the wall.  "Opa"  I whispered.  This was going to be divine!   Surrounded by the typical white walls of a Greek villa, the subtle clatter rising from the kitchen, and the company of good friends, Diane, the charming co-owner and host, graciously welcomed us to her table.   It felt comfortable.  Relaxing.  A mini-retreat amid the scramble and pursuits of daily life. It has been my experience that when friends and family are invited to dine in my home, not a soul leaves the table hungry or dissatisfied.  I was struck by the thought as my food was placed before me.

Generous portions of well seasoned, piping hot platters of chicken souvlaki, dolmathes, rice wrapped in grape leaves and drizzled with a smooth lemon sauce, garlic shrimp, saganaki, a pan fried cheese that is presented table-side and ignited when a steaming hot "secret ingrediet" has been poured over it, and my personal favourite, uvechi, chicken in a creamy tomato and feta sauce awaited my sampling. AND.......

Because I am Celiac, the good chef made everything gluten-free.   Double glory. Dorian's went out of their way to make my experience a pleasant and memorable one. That meant a great deal to me, especially being so diet conscious.   It was important. Though I've never been to Greece, my adventure at the Dorian Greek House provided the impression I sought.   I was grateful and satisfied!   And I discovered one important thing....The rumors that Dorian's has the best hummus in town?  Totally true. Best kept secret till now.  Go check it outYou'll be glad you did.
